About Us

Susan has dedicated her career to the hospitality industry, refining her skills since her teenage years. Her dream was to create a small, intimate space where guests could be cared for like friends. On the other hand, David, an engineer turned chef, pursued his love for cooking, studying classical French cuisine at Cordon Bleu in Ottawa. After excelling in his studies, he worked in top-notch Ottawa restaurants before returning to Nova Scotia in search of his own venture.

When Susan and David met, they shared their dreams and crafted a vision. After three years of searching, they discovered the perfect location—a 140-year-old farmhouse on five acres at the foot of the North Mountain in Canning, Nova Scotia. Formerly Bessie North's residence, a beloved school teacher in the community, they decided to keep the name in her honor.

Bessie North House opened in the summer of 2018, offering guests a seven-course, pre-fixe menu inspired by the season. Surrounded by farms and vineyards, the house stands in a unique corner of the valley, just an hour from Halifax. Those who knew Bessie affirm that she would love what Susan and David are doing.

Join them for dinner and let them take care of you, providing a truly special experience at Bessie North House.
